High CPU usage with everything?

Does anyone have any ideas as to why my cpu usage is high whenever i run any programs?cant seem to find any previous posts that use high cpu with everything!task manager spikes at 100% when i open it for about 5-10 seconds then shows sys idle process at 90-98% which is ok & doesnt show any other programs running above 3-5%.As soon as i open a programme such as firefox, wmp cpu usage spikes at 100% & the pc is extremely slow (as in waiting for the cursor to catch up!).Ive tried system restore but it just says 'restoration incomplete' when its finished.I have also run all the virus/spyware programmes - spyware doctor & windows onecare & it comes up clean. The system is an esystem 105,celeron 2.66ghz,2gb ram & windows xp sp3.Sorry if the information isnt to clear, but its a bit hard to explain in text.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thankyou

Check what programs are running in the background at start-up, one could be eating resources:

Start | Run

Type in

msconfig (hit <OK>)

Go to Start-Up TAB items checked start with Windows and run in the background. Need help identifing post. When you uncheck a item all you are doing is removing the shortcut not the program itself.

I have used one care before and had significant problems with it. A good registry cleaner for XP (and its free) is RegscrubXP, I have used it many many times on all versions of XP.

Try it should clean out those orphan entries.

You should of uninstalled acrobat using Add/remove programs. See if its still there.

tried to install that programme, but just get message: c\programfiles\regscrubxp\unins000.exe
an error occurred while trying to rename a file in the destination directory:movefile failed;code 32
the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.click retry to try again, ignore or skip
retry just brings the same message up again & it wont continue to download.hows that then? ive never used this programme before?
