Active X, plug-ins @ IE

A friend re-installed Windows 98 SE for me recently as it had become very unstable. Since it has been re-installed I have had the following problem:
When going through pages on the internet a box comes up with 'Internet Explorer' at the top and it says:

'Do you want to allow software such as ActiveX controls and plug-ins to run?'

If I click on 'No' the page doesn't always display correctly.
If I click on 'Yes' I often (but not always) get the following box come up

'Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for any inconvenience.'
There is also a check box to re-start IE and also the option to send an error report to Microsoft.

Welcome

Goto Internet Options>Tools>Security
set the security to medium, which is the default.

Also, upgrade to IE6 SP1 via Windows Update.

Thanks for the quick reply. Have tried what you suggested, and re-started the PC, but the problems remain. Already had IE6 SP1. No crititical updates outstanding. Only other updates are as follows:
Media player 9
Net Framework 1.1
Euro Conversion tool
IDE Hard drive cache package
Mapped drive shutdown update
Games & Multi language features
Plus
Drivers - SIS Display software - when I try to install this I get an error message telling me that Windows is unable to back up the current driver file C:\\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SiSInst.dll - could this be the problem? Don't want to inadvertantly cause more problems!

When you get the ActiveX prompt and you click Yes and ge the error, what is the exact error and is there any more info (a more info link or button?)

having looked around it may be a spyware problem.

Run an Antivirus scan and also spyware scans.

Have had a quick look at your suggestions - will follow in more detail when I have time tomorrow - thank you. Am already running ad-aware and AVG anti-virus and zone alarm. Home page is BBC site - no problems with this until I try to 'listen again' on the radio sites.

Thanks for your time on this. My husband's suggestion to solve this problem has been to buy a new PC - which seems a bit extream at the moment - although it is a frustrating problem.
