External hard drive enclosure

I pulled a 160G hard drive out of a 7-year old Dell whose motherboard died. The hard drive is still good, so I thought I'd use it an an external back-up.

The dimensions are 4" X 5-3/4" X 7/8".

I know that I need a hard drive enclosure - how do I find out which one will work for me ? The descriptions of the enclosures that I found online might be very clear to a repair guy, but not to me.

first of all you have to know the drive type. sata or ide...then you pick the proper enclosure based on whether or not the drive came from a laptop or desktop. The description should say which the enclosure is for

The label says "Barracuda 7200.7 160 gigabytes".

There is a diagram on the label that shows a picture of plug-ins for "Jumper Block", "SATA Signal" and "Sata Power".

I suppose that means that it is a SATA drive (whatever that signifies) ?

Yes you have a 3.5" SATA drive, so all you need is to grab a 3.5" SATA drive enclosure. This will allow you to hook the drive up to a new computer via USB, or ESATA. Installing the drive in this enclosure will be easier than you think, any retail store (Best Buy, Staples, etc..) should have these along with many stores online.
