Try Linux Without Installing - Live Eval CDs!

Lately, we have had a number of folks here on the forums interested in trying Linux out for the first time. If you have thought about trying linux and are a bit weary of formatting and installing just to try it out....don't fret, there are means to try linux without even modifying a single byte on your hard drive(s).

They're called Live Eval CD's or just Live CD's. A complete linux distribution on one CD that you can insert into your PC and run linux. These really are completely working Linux OSes on a CD, granted you may not get tons and tons of extra programs like you do on the 3-4 CD sets of a regular distribution, but this is really great for introducing oneself to linux without the install hassles.

I tried Dynebolic last night and it ran great on this PC.

I can't get Knoppix to work. There is some sort of problem with my Vid card.

That link has many different Live CD's.... Just make your choice and give it a try.

Just wanted to give everyone a Review of Suse Eval live CD's.... It loads great and detects everything have on my system. Detected the network card without any problems. Took about 5 minutes to load and be ready to use.

Looks like Mandrake in many ways. They use KDE, so everything is very easy to use. So far I am very impressed with this sucker. Scroll works on mouse etc...

Suse live CD is much better and easier to use than Dynebolic.

I'm currently trying out the SuSE liveCD on an old machine that made its way back to my home office. It is some very very old hardware, circa 1997 actually. I'll post back in a few with the results.

TC, have you tried PHLAK? I'm on it right now and it seem pretty good also. Neat thats for sure. Runs Mozilla's Firebird browser.

Extremely quick to load and so far is working great. Everything I've tried has been very quick.

I actually couldn't figure out what they meant by that. Good thing or bad thing? Not sure yet.
