Old Programs on Vista

Am contemplating buying an Optiplex 755 that comes with XP Pro installed with disks for a Vista Business Downgrade which I plan to install. Question has to do with whether some of my old programs, particularly Day-Timer Organizer (DTO2000) which I love, will work in a Vista environment. I took the disk to BestBuy and they loaded it on a 64 bit Vista machine with no luck, but it did load on a 32 bit machine. The manager told me that it would work fine with 32 bits but that that kind of processor only accommodates 3 Gigs of Ram. Does that mean I should avoid the 4 Gigs or only that the 32 bits will not recognize the extra Gig?I can order 3 Gig s (4 DIMM) on the machine but can get 4 Gigs (2 DIMM) which is expandable for only $3 or $4 bucks more.
To complicate matters further, a Dell technician told me that the processor on the machine (Intel 2 Duo Processor) is both 32 bits and 64 bits. At this point I am thoroughly confused and would appreciate any advice anyone can provide.
Thanks, Sheldon

That manager is an idiot. Vista 32 will recognize more than 3gig. XP recognizes more than 3gig of ram. Why does he think that Vista wouldn't?

Watch dealing with bestbuy other than just buying stuff. Don't ask for advice. All of them try to act like they know everything when in all reality they dont know crap.

If you go with Vista, stick with the 32 bit system. 64 bit has alot of problems with Older programs. Most Old programs won't work with 64 at all.

Dodge: P.S. Do you happen to know if Vista Business is a 32 bit or 64 bit system? Thanks.

Howdy:

Odds are your Vista cd is only 32 bit unless you specifically requested the 64 bit version.

Only Vista Ultimate comes with both versions pre-packaged.

BTW, although the 32 bit versions MAY recognize the full 4GB of ram, it will only be able to utilize about 3.25GB's of it. This is a well-documented fact.

Hi,
the ultimate edition has both versions on the DVD, and lower versions do not have both.

When you buy a Retail ( boxed version) you can get the x64 version DVD.

FAIK, upgrade and downgrade don't have it on DVD, and you would not be entitled to a x64 version of such.

Thanks for that Info Murray. Never knew that. First I've heard of it actually. Ofcoarse I'm a bit out of touch with this type info. Guess I'd better be reading up on that more.

Thats just another reason why Vista is Junk...

why is this a reason why vista is junk??? XP 32 does the same in regards to ram - it will only recognize 3 gigs no matter if you have more. and xp 64 does not come with any version of xp 32.

shelcash,
I run Vista Ultimate 32 bit, have 4GB RAM, of which 3.25B are used by the OS. I have not yet come across a program that does not run, and I have some freeware that I have used 4-5 years on at least three different computers.
Only once or twice did I have to go to properties and check the Compatibility tab.

Joking Renegade. (Guess I should have put that)

Honestly man, vista isn't near as bad as most make it out to be.

Dodge is one of the guys I learned a lot from.
(I am also sure he says that about I.)
I oughta tell Dodge to say "hi" to Brian.
Dodge knows I am basically a luddite. I wish IT evolution was not THAT fast.

Hehe, by the time I knew one percent of what was to know about windows 98, XP had its SP2.
I always thought Dodge is like I. A mecanic with a working brain.
('cept him not being on pentium mountian.)

edit, I wish I were up to speed with AMD.

Last edited by jtdoom; November 29th, 2008 at 02:16 AM. Reason: AMD chipset integration in XP came to mind.
