LINUX Security

Hi,
I am new to Linux. I really want to get into it.
Recently I installed these distros on various machines(ubuntu, xubuntu, pclinuxos 2007,kubuntu).
What I find to be strange after so many years using Xp Pro is this:

does linux need firewall
does linux need antispyware
does linux need anti virus software

I know that the security of Linux is renowned for being superior to Windows but are the above applications required?

I read somewhere that a firewall is only required if you run a Linux mail server-is this true?

Are all Linux distros in general extremely secure thus not requiring firewall / antimalware software?

I'd be delighted on some input to my question. Thank you.

If you're using Ubuntu or Kunbuntu the firewall can be found under your package manager, Synaptic. It's called Firestarter. As far as antivirus, I use ClamAV just so I don't pass any viruses on to Windows users though my emails. It's also listed in Synaptic.

Linux is far more secure than any version of Windows. Anti spyware software is not needed.

Hope this helps.

Agree completely w/ Jmtjet! I'm running Ubuntu on an IBM laptop; Firestarter is the GUI that can be used w/ the 'built-in' iptables firewall of Linux; as you indicated in your OP, the firewall can be set to regulate 'inbound' and/or 'outbound' traffic, if needed (such as on a server) - I've made no changes at all.

I'm also using ClamAV, but rarely do a scan - the program updates its thousands of viral defintions, but these are virtually all Windows viruses, and as indicated mainly to prevent passing viruses onto Windows users! Currently, I don't believe there are any important Linux virues 'out in the wild' now!

Thus, you really need not to worry much about these malware issues that plague Windows users (including myself!) - in fact, I take my IBM on the road since often unprotected 'wireless' networks are the ones available!

Good luck w/ the Linux OSs - I've really enjoyed using Ubuntu!

What about clearing "tracking cookies?"
Is there a utility for that on Linux? Or do I have to DL software for that?

Hi renegade600. I presume you meant 'BleachBit'. Yes, it's a great app.
