Question microsoft excel / works spreadsheet help

Hi there,
I am taking a new job from home. I have microsoft works that has a spreadsheet on iit.
i will be sent excdel docs every day to work from and send them beck in the evening, however, I dont know if the works spreadsheet will read the excel spreadsheet and if it will, should I be able to use it for the work or should I get excel?
How much is it to purchase excel?
I would really appreciate any help as I am not too up on this sort of thing,

Hi and welcome to CTH.
No, Microsoft Works will not do the job of working on Excel spreadsheets.
You don't need to buy MS Office either.
Get Open Office. You can configure it to save every spreadsheet as Microsoft Excel format by default so you can share between the office and home with little or no difficulty.
