Giving SuSe a 2nd chance
In several threads here recently we've drawn some less than favourable impressions of SuSe 9.x - particularly the Personal edition.
In the interest of fairness (and because I couldn't believe this popular distro was really that bad) I have got hold of SuSe 9.1 Professional - (see the Dec 04 issue of LinuxMagazine for your copy) and fired it up. Install - Went relatively smoothly Positives: Network detection - Config of my dial-up plus LAN the best of any distro I've tried. Dial-up test feature in the install phase was a pleasant surprise. Negatives: Speed - OMG! The average Linux install I do takes far less than an hour from boot media to a working desktop. SuSe took 3 hours to install. Post install config: My usual test, the NVIDIA driver. Another pleasant surprise. Boot to a console, run the install shell script. StartX, run YAST and it's all done. No manual edit of XFree86Config required (although I may do a little tweaking). There are some issues with the NVIDIA driver and 2.6 kernels (I'm having identical issues in FC2, Mdk 10 and SuSe9.1) so I wasn't surprised to see the oddness in OpenGL rendering. Still more testing to do (installing 3rd party apps etc)... Conclusion so far: SuSe 9.1 Pro is a good distro. It's a little more memory hungry than other 2.6 kernel distros I've used and very slow to install. YaST is by far the most user-friendly config tool I've used. So why did we loathe SuSe 9.1 Personal? The only conclusion I can draw is that Personal edition should be positioned in the market alongside the likes of Lycoris and Lindows. The Pro version compares favourably to any of the other 2 "user-friendly" distros it is often compared to - FC2 & MDk10. Yes, this is being posted from Konqueror on KDE3.2 in SuSe9.1 Pro. Comments welcome... |

Sounds nice (except the installer)
I just installed FC3 yesterday; and here's what I think of it; KDE 3.3 is a blast!, Really nice stuff. Kernel 2.6.9-1 is faster than I expected (2.6.8 on FC2 was a lot slower). The installation took less than an hour, and I like that. :P Three positives The default desktop manager is GNOME and it's login manager always shows. That's not good..how do I change it? (not switchdesk..dosn't work). That's a negative My sound dosn't work, on MDK 10.1 I had it working moderately. Negative. Few apps directly support it at the moment..rpm.livna.org seems to have the largest repo so far. Neutral. All in all, FC3 is OK, but has some things to fix. |

Hey Smurfy how's about an update on that install. Is it still working for you or have you already ditched it for another project? I was just wondering how it was going because I would like to give SuSe Pro a go myself. I had 9.1 personal and got it going but we all know how that can be. What sort of spec's would you say should work best if I want to set up a box with SuSe Pro?

Bearing in mind I am only running each distro as a desktop, not a server so I can't comment on the long lasting stability but I can say as a desktop O/S I do like it.
Visability - preference would rank it ahead of FedoraCore 2 (probably my KDE bias coming to the fore since FC2 is Gnome-centric - although I do prefer Debian which is also Gnome oriented). Stability - 'Nix is 'Nix - I haven't broken it yet! Usability - As posted above, I like YaST. Overall, I'd still say Mandrake is still better for a new Linux user recently converting from Windows but the learning curve is not to steep. Sociability - Good - Haven't installed a lot of 3rd party apps yet (which is more a reflection of the comprehensive selection of apps included in the distro). Haven't tried to Wine my games yet but that's a time constraint only, not any fear of it failing. Sys Req - SuSe recommends 128MB Pentium-class x86. I'm running on 256Mb, Celeron 566Mhz. I would say that would be Minimum realisticaly. Anything over 1Ghz CPU and 256(min)RAM should be OK. |
