Product/system help

For a class project, my group is designing a library system where customers could scroll through a list of books on a tablet, select the one they want, and a light would appear over the book in question. We want to automate this process, so that it wouldn't matter what spot the book was put in(the bookshelves would have slots for books instead of just on the shelf willy nilly). I was considering using rfid chips, and rfid scanners, but even with only 72 scanners it would be ridiculously expensive. Our "budget is 50,000 dollars, but it can bet stretched a bit, so i'll take suggestions on things that are relatively near that. The problem is, I don't know exactly what to use without going over budget. Any help would be appreciated.

What sort of square footage are you looking at?

What about a tablet application that directs you to the correct row, shelf and book. Lights are cool but what happens when 20 people are all searching for a different book at the same time. All the rows would probably be lit up and there would be twenty lights throughout the rows. Which one is yours? Unless it's a one at a time keosk it could get confusing.
Instead of RFD consider a label scanner. Where each book has the bar scan sticker and as it's placed into the slot it's scanned (perhaps manually by a librarian) and then listed in it's proper place within the tablet info.
