Multi-Saving
G'day Folk's.
I am running 1 internal HD. Split into the 'Linux-Partitions' and a 'Files-Partition'. I also run an 'External-HD' for 'Back-Up Files' In the 'Files-Partition' I store files in folders similar to the 'User-Folders' in Linux. I periodicaly over-copy the folders into the external HD, as back-up. I also have spare external-HD. I am wondering how to leave that HD permanently plugged-in. Open a file from it's 'Internal-HD Folder'. Work on the file. Then click "Save" and have it automatically save both to the folder it was opened from and to the 'empty-external-HD' at the same time. Is this possible? |

Hi Dave,
Would it not be just as easy to run "backup files" each time then you would be sure of getting a good copy to your back-up drive? |

It would require a little bit of reading and configuring on your part, but this would be a perfect candidate for rsync + cron. Use rsync to synchronize your files to your backup device and use cron to schedule an automatic rsync run on a desired interval. For example, have cron sync your files one a day, one an hour, etc.

Thankyou both.
I do backup most-day's by completely over-writing all 500gb at bed-time. But I often switch, quickly back and forth, between files and programs on multiple workspaces. Clicking 'save' as I jump. Your idea sounds interesting kage. I will try it and see if it makes life easier (and back-ups quicker) at the end of the day. My Idea though. Is to do an auto-matic back-up save (to a usb location) linked to the default-save-click without upsetting GIMP (or Libre or any-other software) thoughts about where to go, to open the picture or office-file I had been working on, the prevoius time the picture-file was opened. That way. I can (once-a-week-maybe). Plug in my master-back-up-external-HD and over-write the files from the little-external-HD into the master. And be maximum-safe from an unexpected-crash needing complete HD re-burn, for quickest repair. |

No Kage. Your idea will be good if I am happy to leave the O/S Back-Up HD plugged in and running all the time.
For that type of thing. I use my old 'Acronis v10'. Self-boot CD to back-up the entire system periodicaly. Allthough I bought it back in my XP/Vista days. Acronis10 works quite happily on Linux. |
