Can't play streaming video

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 and I can't seem to get any streaming video to work.
I've tried everything. I installed the latest version of Adobe Flash Player and still nothing. Is there something I need to install. This all started when I reformatted and re-installed 11.04. Can someone please help me?

Thanx

Jim

I would think your Browser is out of date
I have done a simular thing in the past by not staying with the current LTS

If you Google search update Firefox in terminal you will find a command line script to copy and paste in a terminal window

Jim,
Do you have the "restricted extras" package enabled?

There $hould an answer to your problem.
Most people have side stepped the issue and gone to Mint where all the codecs are on the install DVD

I think the regulations in my country are more liberal as far as restricted extras go
Or I think you can install Medubuntu to get the same effect
Its best to install these things first
Google Search [ubuntu 1104 post installation guide]

I've tried everything I can't seem to get it to work. Maybe I will try Mint like you suggested. One question though. This is an older machine. I only have a 1GHZ processor and only 512MB of ram. Will Mint work on this machine?

Thanx

Jim

Jim, I think it is unlikely. I feel there is a function/option/driver/update that is not working or enabled.
I do not have any sensible answer for you other than if if you keep chewing you will get to the solution...

Jim,
Edit:
With a light desktop environment probably yes. It would work but I feel something has been missed and I cannot get to put my finger on it.

I had 11.04 installed on this same pc before and it worked fine. After I re-formatted and re-installed 11.04 is when I ran into this problem. Maybe I will try Mint, but I really want to get the Ubuntu installation working, because that is what I am used to.
Thanx for all your help everyone.

Jim

I couldnt really say I think my fellow countryman is hinting at is your BIOS most likely wont see a DVD drive and Mint with Codecs only fits on a DVD.
You can get Mint to fit on a CD but its minus the Codecs
To be honest if you did get mint to run on it it most likely not be able to play streaming video.

Jim,
What are the symptoms? i.e. What happens when you try to play streaming video and is it in all cases or just some? Include any error messages you may get..

Lubuntu is good for low spec machines and I had installed it on my Emac G4 which is supposed to be 800mhz but i dont know if it has been overclocked as it comes up as unspecified in System Monitor the HDD i first put in it was an 80gig seagate 7200rpm and 2mm cache but old Macs dont do Flashplayer.
I put a laptop HDD with a 8mb buffer [I think thats the same as cache] and installed Ubuntu 12.04 for PPC still no flashplayer
Puppy linux may do flashplayer for your age hardware but the sound quality is poor

I lurked a few forums and this comes up fairly often:

You are missing the Flash plugin (which is also what Youtube uses). Install it from the Ubuntu Software Center.

You can get just the Flash package, or the ubuntu-restricted-extras which also contains other commonly used things that can't be included on the default install for licensing and patent reasons.
Good luck
