Ubuntu & Win7

G'day, Folk's.
I know that Ubuntu 10.04 installs and runs well inside XP and Vista.
Today, I tried to install it inside Win7_Ultimate.
It seemed to install fine. Right up to the 1st reboot. Once there, it couldn't boot Ubuntu.
It could still boot Win7 though.

Are we not yet ready to run inside win7?
Or is there something different to be done during install?

when you boot, does it give you a choice of win7 and ubuntu? Exactly what happens when you try to enter ubuntu?

Nothing different has to be done differently if you install in win7 or by itself.

Thankyou. It appears that I am impatient.

I had removed Ubuntu from win7.
So, I just reinstalled it inside win7.

This time (as before) it came up with this message :-

"Try (hd0,0): NTFS5: No wubildr"

While I wrote down the message and did a couple of other things. It suddenly blinked into a continuation of 1st boot and install.
Then it went ahead and finalized all install and updates.

Since then I have rebooted 6 times with the same result.

Ubuntu boots up and runs fine. With one fault.

When I boot up and get to choose between Win7 and Ubuntu 10.04.
Then, choose Ubuntu.
It gets as far as this message:

Try (hd0,0): NTFS5: No wubildr

And sits there for between 2min 35sec and 3min 01sec. Before blinking into the rest of the boot-up at normal speed.

I always get that message. With all my Ubuntu installs, but in all other installs the message just blinks for 1sec and then continues.

Is there any way I can speed it up when it is running inside Win7?

P.S. I am writing from it at this moment.

Surely that is enough RAM for Ubuntu?

about a month ago my mates HP with 3 gig CPU and 4 gig of RAM was at my place
And I swear this P4 3 gig hyperthreader with 2.5 gigs of Ram was faster and less CPU usage at idle than the Dual core

Hi guys,

I would like to share my experiences with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04. I found it best to shrink my C: Drive from Disk Management and create a new partition. When installing I would choose the "Install them side by side.." option and let Ubuntu get on with it.

Instead of using Wubi, I prefer to use Oracle's VirtualBox (as I'm doing now) for testing before I actually install anything.

Oracle's VirtualBox is very good, but, I find that whatever I put on it runs slower and require's messing around to make it work (close to) fully.

I do use it for a test of a distro that can't run off of the disk and doesn't have Wubi.
Allthough I do look and experiment. I keep coming back to Ubuntu on a reasonably powerful computer.
And, Puppy on the old under-powered computers.

I found 'Yellow Dog Linux' (on Red Hat) the other day. It looked interesting.
So I downloaded it. Burned it to disk and put it in to run it from the disk and see what it looks like.
At 'Boot' my computer doesn't even recognise that it is in the CD/DVD drive, and just goes ahead to let me choose between Windows and Ubuntu.
I double-checked the download and reburned the disk. It made no difference.

To me... It looks loke a failure. Oh well!!!!! Back to Ubuntu. Dependability and reliability are very important.

YDL is for PowerPC not x86. Did you try it on a Mac or a PC?

I tried it on a PC.
I thought that seeing as they had been dumped by Apple in exchange for Intel processors, and now they have signed up with Sony and IBM that they would be OK on PC's.

Hey Craisin.
In regard to the slowness of Ubuntu running when installed from inside win7.

I just removed it and re-installed Ubuntu 10.04 over win7 as a duel-boot.

Now Ubuntu once-again runs as fast as I expect it to run.
So I guess win7 control has something to do with it.

I will leave them running in the old fashioned permanent-duel-boot way and 'to hell' with possibly upsetting microsoft.

Although win7 still seems to be running fine, so far.
