I see the death toll is now 75 with around 300 still missing. And the terrible news is that at least one building has been declared too dangerous for rescuers to attempt to get anyone further out. This is such shocking news.

The NZ people were so good to us in this state, assisting in the recovery efforts after the floods, I glad that we have been able to send some properly trained people over there to assist them.

Yes. The reports are that more than 100 people perished in that building.

And it is truly appreciated Neddie. I'm going to repost a message that was posted on a public NZ message board by a Christchurch resident because it applies to all that have expressed kind thoughts here too.

Quote:
Just a simple thankyou from Christchurch..
Our beautiful city is broken, our cherished love ones are injured, gone..
Everyone offering help, from around the country, to around the world, every single little thing, your kind words.. everything... it's all so gratefully received. To see you all.. and people around the world, coming so quickly to our aid, it's humbling.

So...
Thankyou all <3

Hi all. Posting from my mobile.
No power (net) water etc.

Glad to report that we are all physically safe.

We are in the north east side of town bad damage all around but only cracking at my place. Lucky.
Feared for my life cowering under table as contents of house thrown around me.

Nearly up to 100 confirmed dead. I expect that to double or triple yet.
My normal workplace 1 block east of ctv building. So far no friends or work mates known missing.

Thanks for the thoughts. I will be back when we get power.

Afraid we have not heard from AnnMarie for a couple of days, she has relatives in Christchurch, I hope they are OK too. Prayers and best wishes for them, Annie.

Thanks Neddie. They are safe and I'm relieved to hear you and your family are too smurfy.

The official death toll is now 113 and there are still more than 200 people unaccounted for. We are a tiny nation of just over four million people and I think that almost Kiwi knows someone who has been affected by the Earthquake and those that dont, are feeling the sadness of our nation.

Heartbreaking stories are emerging like the woman trapped inside a building who managed to ring her son on her mobile to tell him goodbye and the man who rang his wife to tell her he loved her just before he died. We are being shown pictures of men, women and children crying outside collapsed buildings knowing there is no hope that their loved one survived.

I wont post anymore links, they are just awful. Our government has now declared a national state of emergency.

Update

Got power back on at 9pm Thursday night.
Got satellite TV & Internet back and wished we hadn't.
We had been listening to the radio almost non-stop but nothing prepares you for the visuals.
My 18yr old was in the CBD right near the CTV building and took ipod photos on the way home so I had some idea of the extent of the damage. Walking around the neighbourhood looking at the liquefaction, substantial road damage.

Photos (Sorry Annie)

Some 1st hand imagery...

Inside my house within 5 minutes of the shake:

The trailer which is normally not on this angle:

Had to break into the garage, Electric garage door opener useless and the back door was buried:

Troy was in town with the iPod touch...

Opposite his tertiary design school - MP's office worse for wear

A few doors East is an alleyway looking down to the back of the 5 story CTV building - except now you can see the Inland Revenue Department building over the road instead. This was taken just before the smoke started pouring out of the collapsed CTV building:

Looking South down Madras St - CTV collapse is on the right:

Grand Chancellor starting to slip:

On the walk home:

Fitzgerald Ave bridge:

Just around the corner from our house, this Ford ute was doorhandle-deep in the road:
