I tried that, Dave - no joy with it at all as it simply didn't work.
I did get the manual or advanced option - However, the information that I seen looked like it was there as confirmed as opposed to information that could be changed.. I'm still looking for a partition tool. |

The ultimate bood CD has many partitioning tools.
What was wrong with gparted liveCD ? |

I'll give that a go.
I couldn't get it to work - I probably did something wrong, no doubt. I actually had burnt it wrong (no surprise there) and finally got round to partitioning it, so will jump into the installation now. Last edited by Slogan; May 26th, 2006 at 03:27 PM. |

Tried to install it, got as the far as the pre-installation bit and it won't continue because of an error: This is the screen I get to:
Partitioning Format partition /dev/hdb1 (9.7GB) for / with reiserfs Format partition /dev/hdb3 (9.7GB) for /home with reiserfs Set mount point of /dev/hba1/ to Windows/C Use /dev/hdb2 as SWAP Set mount point of /dev/hdb4 to /Windows/D Software No catalogue found at: 'dvd:///?devices%3d%2fdev%2fhdc%2c%2fdev%2fhdd' Error: No proposal -- Not sure what is going on there, hence my posting it here. |

I think your trying to install SuSe, no ??
Here's 18,700 hits on google to start sifting through http://www.google.com.au/search?hs=1...G=Search&meta= The 3rd hit down has some insight. Definately is an issue wit hthe DVD your using. Whether its the disk or the drive, is unclear. Steps I would take is: 1. MD5sum the iso image you used. 2. Change DVD drives. 3. change slave/master setup 4. Install Kubuntu |

As far as I can tell - everything is in working order from my end. Not sure what is wrong.
Is Kubuntu much different? |

KDE is kubuntu's default desktop environment, which looks and behaves quite a bit like windows. Lots of people like kubuntu but its something you have to try for yourself. I don't intend to install it because out of the box it lacks useful unix tools such as make and I really can't be bothered to install it back when other distros already have it.

Cheers for the info, Jedi.
I'm not really sure what to do in regards to install - when I click the Europe link for the DVD it brings up the index of a load of files - do I need all of these files or one? One link that lets you download the .iso would be the ticket... I'm pretty much open to any distro - I just want to test Linux out for myself - although KDE seems to be what I'm after in regards to how things look. On the website that Dave provided - they said it was a bad time to start working with Linux Suse 10.1 as "the dust was still settling" and add that onto someone of my inexperience at Linux - and it's a bit of a bad recipe. |

they've been having issues still with synching the servers, especially for the dvd image. its the only one that hasn't yet appeared on the linuxiso site yet. The 5 cd images are there. linuxiso is a site that makes downloading easier, normally. I'd give you the link but the dvd image isn't there yet.
I strongly suggest md5sum checking your iso. could be the cause of your problems, who knows? Last edited by jediforce; May 27th, 2006 at 11:51 PM. |

Just installed it. Wow, it's,...it's beautiful. Thanks very much to everyone who has helped me (sounds like an Oscar speech) and particularly to Dave - you've been a huge help mate.
One more thing before I stop annoying everyone - what can I use for MSN messenger on this? I've downloaded a few "msn's" via the link in your name but I don't think they've been compatiable with this... Cheers once again. Last edited by Slogan; May 28th, 2006 at 04:59 AM. |

Gaim and Kopete are the most popular. Gaim is cross-platform, kopete is strictly for *nix. They both have different strengths/weaknesses. They also both support multiple protocols (think trillian) so they can connect you to aim, yahoo, msn, gtalk, jabber, irc, and many more all at once. (this is especially nice if you are accustom to using multiple clients and tying up a large amount of memory) Between the two, I prefer gaim.

I have heard of Gaim before.
What do I download though in regards to a file type? I've tried a few on that download list and they're not playing fair game - probably for a good few reasons. |

Kubuntu uses the apt-get package manager. In a terminal (konsole in kde system menu) you can run 'sudo apt-get update' to update the sources, then 'sudo apt-get install gaim' and it should fetch/install the package for you. (you will need to enter your root password) If it does not, you need to change your /etc/apt/sources.list file, just post it here and we can show you what to change.

doesn't kubuntu come with gaim? something to look around for if you did the full install. I know that most distros do come with gaim installed for you. otherwise, packet managers are a godsend
