My earliest memory is when I was two and a few months, of my mother telling me not to draw on the walls because my father would be home from the war soon and we wanted the house looking nice.

I remember the first time I saw my father, it was on christmas day 1945, he had arrived back in the UK from Italy the previous night and I met him as I went to crawl into bed with my mother on a cold christmas morning. I remember him as a big hairy man.

2 years old, I discovered a small cabinet/closet in the wall going up the stairs to our apartment (fifth floor). I opened the door and crawled inside, and was bitten by a rat. This was in Detroit. I know the rest of the story from being told - up to the rat bite is all I really remember.
