Computer Freezing
I am having trouble with my computer it keeps freezing up when I play videos with Windows Media Player. After it plays for so long it just freezes, and it has a repeating noise coming out of the speakers. I have to shut the computer off by holding the power button till it shuts off. I don't know what to do. Can anybody help?

Hi. I actually solved the problem last night. I ran across a discussion about a file named msdmo.dll, apparently this file sometimes gets replaced with a newer version which causes the lockup problem. What was suggested was to find the file in the C\windows\system32 folder and rename it to msdmo.bak then reinstall Windows Media Player 9 or 10.
What I did was uninstall WMP10, which rolled back to WMP9. I then went into add and remove windows components and removed WMP9. Next, I searched my computer for the msdmo.dll file. I found several copies on my computer, including the one in the system32 folder which was dated in 2004 all the others were dated in 2002. I renamed the msdmo.dll file to msdmo.bak and it was promptly replaced by windows file protection system, but the new file was dated 2002 not 2004. I then reinstalled WMP10 and gave it a try. All is working fine, now. no more freeze ups while surfing, and I can play quicktime videos over the web without the sound stutter lockups. So, to summarize, you may only need to search your computer for the msdmo.dll file. If the one in the system32 folder is dated in 2004, delete it and replace it with one of the versions dated in 2002. I just did the add and remove of WMP because that was suggested in the discussion. Good Luck. Last edited by davec69; December 29th, 2005 at 10:04 PM. |
