Computer does not have operating system - where is it?

Please bear with me as this has been a harrowing day for me, as it looks as though I have lost all my files, job applications, programs, etcand I don't know why. Tis is a sequence of events as they have happened today and I wonder if anyoen can shed any light on it and maybe offer some help and advice.

My laptop is doing strange things. It boots up OK, but after a while it makes that sound when an external appliance (e.g. Ipod, USB memory) is being unplugged. Soon after this has happened the computer freezes. I cannot open task manager, move the mouse, shut it down - nothing. The virus check comes up with nothing. I am at my wits end. Anyone got any idea what is up or what I could do? It has happened about six times today and it is making me mad.

Now the whole thing has gone tits up. It won't boot up at all. I was starting to try and do some work and I message came up saying 'Windows has been shut down', with the caption BAD POOL CALLER or something along those lines. I haven't a clue what's going on, except to say it is f***** and it isn't booting up at all anymore. The hard disk drive light is on all the time when the power is on and nothing else. I am assuming it is having a problem with something installed on my computer, but I haven;t installed anyhting new for a month or so. And the problems began today.

22:00CET
Now when I try to start it up, I get a black screen where it says there is a media cable disconnected. A few seconds after it says 'no operating system'. Which is cack, as it should have XP on it.

Just turned it on again to be presented with a blank screen, a flashing white cursor and the hard drive light on and not blinking. Need help. FFS, the laptop is SIX MONTHS old and of course, nobody is available to take my call at Customer Services.

23:00CET
Now XP is running. What on earth is going on?

Welcome to CTH Abu Hamster. I have checked your log and I cannot see any evidence of malware or spyware that might cause problems.

This error is often caused by a malfunctioning driver and from what you have described, I would suspect a problem with 3rd party USB drivers and/or cables. See here. Try disconnecting your USB devices and see if the problem still occurs.

I am not a hardware guru though so I am transferring your topic to our Hardware Forum for more help.
