On the positive side, you don't have gnash causing any conflicts. On the down side, we aren't any closer to figuring out what the problem is.

Ok, lets try this. Close any browser windows you have open and then open a terminal. From the terminal (command prompt), type "firefox" and press enter. Firefox will run and print any errors to the terminal window where you ran it from. Now immediately go and watch a flash video (or attempt to) and then close firefox. You should see some errors messages in the terminal. Please copy and paste these errors here. Thanks!

Well I was hoping that would give us a better idea of how to progress, but I guess we will have to try something different. First, close Firefox. Then, go back to your terminal and run the following:

Code:
 sudo apt-get --purge remove flashplugin-installer
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer
You will be prompted for your password with each of these. The first should remove the flash plugin and the second will install it. Once the install finishes, open Firefox and try to play a flash video. Let us know how it goes!

Thanx Kage for the suggestion, however that didn't work. Do you have any other tricks up your sleeve?

It appears as if lower spec hardware has been shut out of streaming video.

On my 800mhz Emac Video Downloadhelper works great

apparently your flashplayer still works but the video sites are not letting the older systems stream video.
Some guy on you tube has made his old Mac appear as if it has a later plug in so his works but he wonders for how long

Thanx craisin. I will try that, however why would the video sites not allow outdated hardware to view their content. I mean it works fine on my Win XP partition, just not with Ubuntu.

Cause the old hardware slows down their site

Haha, i dont think your hardware affects their servers...

Anyway, if you're still having problems, you could try installing WINE and then Internet explorer, and then the flashplayer, its takes a long time to do, but it will allow you to use the newer adobe flashplayers not supported on Linux. If your OS is like mine and has a serious grudge against adobe it's the only way to stream. On another note, I suggest using virtual machines, say one with windows and one with linux, that way you don't have to bother with problems like this

Wow, xD The solution to the problem was meant for OP, also more ram isn't always better. The OS will use what it needs, in terms of memory, lots of it goes unused for long periods of time, 4gigs is not really economical for what i do with this laptop. Now, 4GB RAM on one of my servers? that's way too little to be even close to effective.

If i DID have my pc outfitted with 4gigs of ram i would probably use a hypervisor with multiple operating systems installed (ubuntu, windows 7, msBob? ) at least then i'd be getting my money's worth.

As you have 3 pages and you havent told us what kind of CPU you have
Most likely a Celeron with a small cache
Your hard drive most likely old with a small cache
Do you have a graphics card?

I second this.
Certainly has nothing to do with your hardware.

Jim. Have you tried installing a different browser in Ubuntu?
This is either a corrupt flash plugin or a Firefox issue. Kage's method 'should' have ruled out the corrupt flash.

I would try a different browser (e.g. Chromium) and if that works, then I would blow away Firefox and reinstall it.

I don't have an 11.04 install at the moment, only an xubuntu 11.10 and an older Ubuntu 9.x
