Why can I see a USB stick drive but but can't open it?

I have a small USB thumb drive I've used for years. I can put it in a USB port & my Win10 -Asus -ROG laptop makes the sound that a new device was plugged in, I have " This PC" opened. I can see the icon for the device pop up "USB Drive (E)". If I double click on it a window pops up saying " please insert a disk into USB Drive (E)". I can right click on it & see all the options. I figured maybe it needs to be formatted again. I select to format the device & I get a popup window saying "There is no disk in E. Insert a disk & try again". So why can I see the drive show up as available in "This PC" but I can't do anything with it? It appears as the E drive but then the system acts like it's not even there.

How can I fix this?

Hi there,
I experienced the same problem...
When it shows "Removable Disk".... I right clicked & hit Properties.......then filled in a Name in the Summary tab (my name)....I suddenly got a pop up & wow ... it started working again..... whew..... it was some relief !!!

I am using Transcend JF V10 8 GB
