By default, the Power Management feature of USB mouse devices is turned off. This setting is different from classic PS/2 computer functionality. Therefore, to enable the Wake from standby option, you must manually turn on the Power Management feature for the USB mouse.

To manually enable the Wake from standby option for the USB mouse, start Device Manager, right-click the USB mouse driver, click Properties, and then click to select the "Allow this device to wake the system from standby" check box.

Does the keyboard bring the computer out of standby?

If the mouse is an optical one, is the light on when you move the mouse in standby mode?

Try going to device manager and to Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Look through the power tab on the properties of each USB root hub listed until you find the one with your mouse on it. Then go to the power management tab and see if "allow the computer to turn this device off in standby mode" is ticked.

I did sort of mention that above..

But yes, I am also interested if your keyboard works?

This problem sometimes occurred in Win XP prior to Service Pack 2. Do you have SP2 installed?

I have remembered when I had a similar problem to this it was because my monitor was not coming out of standby.

Try changing the 'turn off monitor' setting in the power settings to never and see if the problem still occurs. The monitor will still go blank but will not go into standby.

For me this problem just disappeared when I tried turning the setting on again later.
