XP home will not load after windows updates

I was working on a friend's computer. He has a Compaq (not sure which model) with XP Home Edition. He had loads of spyware on the computer. I ran ad-aware several times to make sure and get rid of everything. After I did this, I went to www.windowsupdate.com to download all available updates. There were 18 available. I downloaded them all. After they all finally installed, I clicked on the "restart now" button. After I did this, the computer just kept restarting while it is in the middle of the XP startup screen. It will not load into XP or any version of safe mode.

Has anyone ever had any problem similar to this? Is there any way to get past this problem without formatting and reloading Windows? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to cybertech.

You said it wouldn't boot into any safe mode options. Do you mean it wont even get into Command Prompt?

Thanks for the reply. After several attempts I got it to the command prompt. I still couldn't get it to do anything after that. I need to make a better boot disk I think. Do you think a virus could be a possibility? He doesn't have any anti-virus software on his computer.

Yes. I had this problem. Phone Microsoft UK 0870 60 10 100. They helped me recover my data.
