memory

I am very new to the whole computer thing as stated previously. I now am having a problem with memory. I have 72mb. According to Microsoft System info, I have 68% system resources free. According to AOL system info, I have no memory available, 100%load. It is at about 70% before I get online. I tried to close programs in the background, but it doesn't seem to make a diference. What if anything can i do?

What do you mean you are having a problem with memory? Are you getting any specific error messages?

If it's just a slow boot up time:
Perhaps go into msconfig, and under the start up tab, uncheck any unneccessary things from running at start up.
(start...run...type in: msconfig click ok...and check under the start up tab)
Here are two links to tell you what those items are:

Msconfig entries
and
More of the same

Thank you Daizy. I am only having a memory problem while online. I cannot access any game sites. I followed your instructions but did not have anything there that I shouldn't except msn messenger. When trying to go to a game site I get the error message not enough memory available. Before I get online according to AOL system info I am at about 50%load. After connecting it is about 85%load. Then when I try to load a game room, something called MDM is running, which I have no clue what it is. If the room loads it is only for a second or two before it loses everything. Is there anything I can do to find out why. I am having no problem with memory according to microsoft system info. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi honeycat75 - it would be a good idea if we had a look at your startups.

Go here and download and run Startup List. It will generate a log file. Copy the log and paste it back into this thread

REM DOSSTART.BAT is run whenenver you choose "Restart the computer
REM in MS-DOS mode" from the Shutdown menu in Windows. It allows
REM you to load programs that you might not want loaded in Windows,
REM (because they have functional equivalents) but that you do
REM want loaded under MS-DOS. The two primary candidates for
REM this are MSCDEX and a real mode driver for the mouse you ship
REM with your system. Commands that you want present in both Windows
REM and MS-DOS should be placed in the Autoexec.bat in the
REM \Image directory of your reference server. Please note that for
REM MSCDEX you will need to load the corresponding real-mode CD
REM driver in Config.sys. This driver won't be used by Windows 95
REM but will be available prior to and after Windows 95 exits.
REM
REM This file is also helpful if you want to F8 boot into MS-DOS 7.0
REM before Windows loads and access the CD-ROM. All you have to do
REM is press F8 and then run DOSSTART to load MSCDEX and your real
REM mode mouse driver (no need to remember the command line parameters
REM for these two files.
REM
REM - You MUST explicitly specify the CD ROM Drive Letter for MSCDEX.
REM - The string following the /D: statement must explicitly match
REM the string in CONFIG.SYS following your CD-ROM device driver.

Hi honeycat75 - MDM.exe the Machine Debug Manager and it is used by developers for debugging. If you have no need for it, go to Start > Run and type

msconfig

Then ok. Click on the Startup tab and when you find it, uncheck it and reboot your PC.

Also, open your browser and go to Tools > Internet Options and click on the General Tab. Click on Settings (next to Temporary Internet Files) and then click on View Objects. Rightclick on each and when you find the below ActiveX control, delete it. It may be needed to play games on the site that you use but, if so, you will be prompted to download it again.

[{4248083C-9656-11D2-8B7F-00105A17847A}]
CODEBASE = http://downloads.mplayer.com/MplayerAutoInstaller.exe

If there are any damaged controls there, delete those also.

Do you have any demonstration software from Sunbelt Computer Company installed on your PC? Have a look in Add/Remove programs. If you do have and no longer use it, uninstall it.

Let us know how you get on.

Thank you for the suggestions. I went to start-up, but the MDM is not checked. I also checked for the sunbelt. Not there. Now. This is where I am having trouble in background programs. I am currently running; America Online, Explorer, MDM, Rnaapp, Netdde, and Systray. I do not know what they all are but they are definately using much memory. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Hi again honeycat75 - I have done some research and I think that MDM.exe is the culprit. There is a bug with MDM where it will regularly create zero-length temporary files in the Windows folder and not delete them.

To stop it in its tracks, you will have to edit the registry. Go to Start > Run and type

regedit

then OK. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices and look in the right hand pane for MDM.exe. When you find it, delete it. Close the registry editor and reboot. Now run a search for MDM.exe and when you find it, rename it to MDM.old

Your PC will now need a good cleanup. You may like to try jv16 with Installer. If you decide to do so, I have posted the instructions for use below:

Install then restart your computer. Shut down everything in systray that will close and make sure that your browser is closed and you are off the net.

When you open the program, click on Registry Tool. It will give you a complete listing of the programs on your computer. Search that list VERY carefully and make sure that you put a checkmark in front of the ones that you KNOW that you dont have anymore (previously uninstalled) then click "Remove". On the same screen, click "Tools" then "Registry Cleaner". Make sure that there are checkmarks in "I want to manually verify deleted entries", "Show why each item should be safe to remove" and "Dont pop up the registry cleaner after scan". Make sure that the other options are NOT checked. Click "Continue", and make sure that all the options in the next screen are checked and then click "Continue" again and let it find everything that its going to. Click "Select", then “Special Select” and click "All items that are safe to remove"" and then "Remove". Close that screen

While you are there, you might as well clean up your drive. Click on "File Tools". Go to Preferences and make sure that you select "Create a backup" Now choose your Source (drive) and select "Find Only Broken Shortcuts". Let it find them, "Select", "All" and "Remove" (at the bottom). Click on Find Broken ShortCuts again to unselect it and then do the same thing for "Temp Files" (dont use the other selections unless you really know what you are doing).

Let us know how you get on.
