The link to download mcrepair.exe on this page worked for me.

It's about 3/4 of the way down the page under the heading, "Run the mcrepair.exe tool."

Also I tried to download Hijackthis -it seems to download but will not run "unexpected error" . So, then I tried SIlentrunner but got " needs WMI get it from http:\\tinyurl.com" That link is Microsoft that I can't download from

I thought for Windows98 you had to do this for system file checker-
1. Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then
point to Select System Tools.
2. Click System Information.
3. On the menu bar, click Tools.
4. Click System File Checker.
5. Choose either Scan for altered files or Extract one file from installation disk.

For Win98SE all you need to type is "sfc" (no quotes) in the Run box.. sfc.exe at the worst..

sfc /scannow is for XP systems..
