I got a new email address when this happened to me some years ago. Let my friends know my new address, and kept my old address for a short while so I could get any I missed and then let them know, finally dumped the old address.

I went with Gmail that has a great spam filter which catches almost all of them.

What is the solution
You can never get rid of all spam.

In many cases, just waiting it out is your best option as it often will just die back down. Yes, you can start using a different email address, but chances are, you will start getting spam there too.

The problem with blacklists is bad guys NEVER use their own email addresses. Instead, they "spoof" another address, often someone's who is totally innocent and unaware someone is sending spam (or malware) under their name. The point is, blacklists often block legitimate emails too.

Gmail does indeed have a build-in spam blocker, but I would not call it "great" by any means. It catches 100s, but also is notorious for "false positives" - tagging legitimate and wanted emails as bad. And the bad part is, Gmail will automatically delete tagged emails after 30 days.

It's false positive rate is so bad, I have set up a recurring reminder that yells at me every 3 weeks, reminding me to look in Gmail's spam folder and "untag" the good emails.

If you use a local email client (like Office Outlook) you can set up filters. Or you can use a spam blocker program like MailWasher Free for one email address, or MailWasher Pro if you receive emails at multiple email addresses.

But no spam blocker is perfect. It is like robocalls and telemarketers - the bad guys always seem to stay 1 step ahead of the good guys.
