C:\Documents Folder
On startup my C:\Documents folder opens.
Annoying, and I can simply close it. Problem is it contains p7d files that I cannot open. When I delete the files and close the folder, next time, on startup, the folder reappears with different p7d files. This leads me to believe that some program that I installed is accessing my computer. Checked the registry and entry is correct: C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe, I ran Autoruns sysinternals but no help. Would appreciate any ideas about how to stop this. |

Type Folder Options in Start Search
Under the VIEW TAB in the Advance Settings panel look for Restore previous folder windows at logon. UnCheck this options and then hit apply then OK, reboot In the registry are you looking at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon In the right side panel, change value of Userinit to : Then: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer\ Advanced In the right side panel, change the value of PersistBrowsers to 0. Reboot |

Thanks Murf.
In Folder Options - Restore previous folder windows at logon was already unchecked. Changed registry to C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe (no comma) PersistBrowsers was already at 0. Rebooted but no luck: C:\Documents Folder opened again, today with six p7d files. Yesterday it had two. Seems as though something is putting these files in my computer at startup. If I could open one of these files maybe I could determine what program is doing this. Anyway to open one? (I did a Google search and tried various suggestions but none worked. |

What do you see if you right click on the file, open its properties and select the details tab? At least that's what you do in Win7. XP it's probably different and not details.

All 6 Files differ in Size and Date Created.
Example of one "Properties": Under "General": 20180610-15002900.p7d "Type of File": P7D "Opens With": Unknown Application "Location": C:\Documents "Size": 1.14 MB "Size on Disk": 1.14 MB "Created": Sunday, June 10, 2018, 3:00:29PM "Modified": Sunday, June 10, 2018, 4:52:42 PM "Accessed": Today, June 15, 2018, 8:57:01 AM "Attributes": Read only and Hidden Boxes not checked "Advanced Attributes": File is ready for Archiving |

P7D files normally are compressed files, right click on it and unpack/unzip.
But I believe you may have malware/spyware that is causing it. Also in your start up folder see what is loading with windows. Start>run Type in MSCONFIG in the open box, hit enter Click on the Startup TAB This takes you to a page with a list of "startup items." Startup items are programs that are automatically loaded every time you turn on your computer. Some startup programs are absolutely necessary, others are simply a waste of RAM. See if there is anything there you do not recognize. A good data base to look at; http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_search.php I would also run a malware/spyware scan. |

No luck unzipping files.
Antivirus scan did reveal 2 suspicious items that I removed but still same problem on startup. Will spend some time on http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_search.php you recommend. I'll report back if I find anything. Thanks for your help. |

Removed many items from startup. Computer boots up much faster now.
Stumbled on a solution to p7d problem. Trying to open the p7d files - thought I'd try Word Pad. Surprised that it opened the file to a very long list of letters but mostly gibberish. But was able to make out "Video Editor.ccp" among the letters. Removed my Video editor program and the p7d files no longer appear. But C:\Documents Folder still opens on startup a minor annoyance. Thanks again for you help. Last edited by umc276; June 18th, 2018 at 05:04 PM. Reason: spelling error |

Yes exactly.
One Google search recommended: \WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe, but the one you mention and that I used has no comma. I tried it both ways. |
